Alice Brennan is a designer and educator from Bray, Co. Wicklow. She has just completed the joint Honours BA in Design and Education at The National College of Art and Design.

Alice’s work is designed to be both functional and playful. In creating a collection of rocking plant containers Alice explores the balance between the stresses associated with city life and the relief that can come from engaging with horticulture. The inspiration for her work is drawn from the quiet and often overlooked pocket parks in urban environments which have been proven to benefit society and wildlife. Her ceramic work is carried out using found objects and slip cast processes.

Alice’s project Pocket Parks, hopes to encourage people, who may not have a garden, to grow their own plants and vegetables at home. She also hopes to raise awareness of the correlation between horticulture engagement and stress reduction.

In designing the work Pocket Parks: Series II Alice played with this idea of balancing stress and nature in a literal way by implementing mathematics and balance to create rocking plant pots. Grey with a pop of bright colours, like the pocket parks in the urban environment, these planters threaten to fall over, tip and wobble. They create tension while balancing on two points, and relief when they rock. They are not static, but changeable, they can be positioned to follow the light, rotate and respond to the lightest touch. Singularly or together these Pocket Parks are for practical living, real life and everyday use. They are a pocket sized way to aid your day.
