Luke Holden is a visual and sound artist completing a BA (Hons) in Fine Art with a concentration in Glass, at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland. Luke uses a variety of materials and techniques to explore phenomena of how to become more physically and consciously present in a space. He creates visual and audible installations that are informed by his previous background of working at industrial sites. In 2016, he was awarded scholarships to attend three glass centers in the United States including; the Pittsburgh Glass Centre, the Pilchuck Glass School and the Studio, Corning Museum of Glass. He also won a commission to produce the 2016 ADFX awards for the 2016 ADFX award ceremony. He has exhibited his work in Prague, the US and Ireland.

My research project Palpable Presence-Space, explored creating environments in which the viewer could become more aware of the physical-self in real space and time; to achieve a conscious understanding of how present one is in one’s daily living experience.

Today’s advances in technology have enabled a generation of millennials to split their living experiences between the physical-self and the cyber-self. Through use of a ten by five centimeter electronic arm extension device one can transport one’s eyes, ears and minds to another dimension. Whether this act is perceived as a positive or negative human activity, it is an activity that is rapidly changing humankind’s relationship to the physical world, due to a constant internet interface.

Usually, when a work is positioned in the gallery setting an invisible barrier is created between the artefacts and the viewer. My installation, Palpable Presence-Space attempts to break down the duality that exists between the artefact and the viewer by encouraging the viewer to engage their senses of hearing, touch and sight; to allow for a more physical experience of the work. An authentic experience that can only be experienced by being physically present in the installation space.
